Decision:

The primary objective of the Physiotherapy study program is to address the health needs of individuals, groups, and the wider community through evidence-based, non-invasive therapeutic approaches. The program is designed to promote and maintain health across all age groups, including vulnerable and disabled populations, prevent diseases associated with physical inactivity, and support healthy lifestyle interventions, as well as provide therapeutic procedures grounded in physiotherapeutic principles. Furthermore, the program contributes to health education and awareness initiatives, multidisciplinary teamwork in rehabilitation centers and clinical departments, and the advancement of physiotherapy practice through applied research and innovation.

The educational aim of the program is to prepare physiotherapists as key professionals in promoting physical, mental, and social well-being. Graduates will be equipped to assess and support individuals and communities in achieving optimal functional capacity, with a strong emphasis on preventive care, health maintenance, and the implementation of modern rehabilitation techniques. Physiotherapists are recognized as primary providers of therapeutic exercise and movement-based interventions within clinical settings.

Graduates of the Physiotherapy program can pursue careers in various healthcare and rehabilitation settings, including public and private hospitals, rehabilitation centers, physiotherapy clinics, family medicine centers, and long-term care facilities. They may also work in patients’ homes by providing community-based care and home rehabilitation services, as well as in sports centers and sports clubs as specialists in injury prevention and sports injury rehabilitation. In addition, graduates can be involved in health promotion and disease prevention programs, educational institutions, and non-governmental organizations, as well as contribute to research projects in the field of rehabilitation and physiotherapy. With further experience and professional development, they may advance into leadership roles within rehabilitation services or continue their studies in the second cycle for further specialization.

Utilizes physical therapy as a core treatment modality, critically evaluating techniques and methods of application. Independently administers kinesiotherapy, determining appropriate dosage, duration, and intensity to enhance functional capacity in daily life and occupational activities for persons with disabilities. Designs and implements individualized training plans and programs tailored to therapeutic goals, and assesses functional abilities using objective, evidence-based evaluation methods. Selects optimal physical therapy and kinesiotherapy techniques based on clinical indications and patient needs, and monitors progress and outcomes to guide ongoing therapeutic strategies.

Establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships that foster patient motivation and active participation in rehabilitation. Implements preventive strategies to reduce behavioral disorders associated with physical disability and promotes environmental education through basic preventive principles that optimize the balance between assistance and self-care for patients and individuals with disabilities.

Demonstrates proficiency in the motor application of contemporary kinesiotherapy concepts and the use of physical aids and assistive devices. Assumes a leadership role in organizing and coordinating multidisciplinary teams, including secondary medical personnel, highly specialized healthcare professionals, and non-medical staff.     The course aims to provide students with knowledge of the relationship between psychological factors and physical health, as well as their impact on the rehabilitation process. Students will develop an understanding of health behaviors, patient motivation, and psychological factors influencing recovery and adherence to physiotherapy treatment. The course also focuses on the development of professional communication and counseling skills, including therapeutic communication with patients and their families. Students are trained to build effective patient relationships, provide basic psychological support, and apply communication techniques that enhance the quality of care and rehabilitation outcomes.

    The course “Anatomy I” provides fundamental knowledge of the structure and organization of the human body, with a focus on the basic anatomical systems. Students are introduced to the macroscopic structure of the body, including the skeletal, muscular, and joint systems, as well as essential anatomical terminology required for studies in health sciences and physiotherapy. The course aims to build a scientific foundation for understanding body function and the relationship between structure, movement, and health. In addition, students develop skills to identify and describe the main parts of the human body using models, anatomical atlases, and visual materials. This course prepares students for clinical and rehabilitation subjects by establishing a solid foundation for understanding physiological and pathological processes in physiotherapy practice.

    The course “Physiology and Neurophysiology I” provides fundamental knowledge about the normal functioning of the human body and the neurophysiological mechanisms that regulate the activity of the nervous system. Students are introduced to the basic principles of cell, tissue, and organ system function, as well as the role of the nervous system in controlling and coordinating physiological processes. The course also focuses on understanding nerve transmission, reflexes, sensory function, and motor control, forming the basis for understanding normal body functions and disorders that affect movement and rehabilitation. This course is essential for linking basic scientific knowledge with clinical application in physiotherapy practice.

    Lënda “Fiziologjia dhe Neurofiziologjia I” ofron njohuri bazë mbi funksionimin normal të organizmit të njeriut dhe mekanizmat neurofiziologjikë që rregullojnë aktivitetin e sistemit nervor. Studentët njihen me parimet themelore të funksionimit të qelizave, indeve dhe sistemeve organike, si dhe me rolin e sistemit nervor në kontrollin dhe koordinimin e proceseve fiziologjike. Gjithashtu, lënda fokusohet në kuptimin e transmetimit nervor, refleksit, ndjeshmërisë dhe kontrollit motorik, duke krijuar bazën për të kuptuar funksionet normale dhe çrregullimet që ndikojnë në lëvizje dhe rehabilitim. The course also focuses on the development of professional behavior, responsibility, and adherence to legal and ethical standards in the healthcare environment. Students are trained to analyze complex ethical situations, make well-reasoned decisions, and act in accordance with the professional code of conduct in physiotherapy and healthcare practice.

    Clinical Practice I represents the initial phase of students’ practical training in real healthcare settings, where they apply the theoretical knowledge gained during their studies. During this practice, students become familiar with the organization of healthcare institutions and the physiotherapy work process, developing basic skills in patient assessment, identification of functional problems, and application of simple physiotherapeutic interventions under professional supervision. Clinical practice also aims to develop communication skills with patients and the multidisciplinary team, adherence to ethical and professional principles, and acquisition of basic clinical documentation skills. Students begin to build their professional competencies by integrating theory with practice, as an important step toward the development of the future physiotherapist.

    The course provides fundamental knowledge of the principles, concepts, and basic methods of physiotherapy as a healthcare discipline. Students are introduced to the role of physiotherapy in health promotion, disease prevention, and the rehabilitation of individuals with functional impairments. The course develops an understanding of rehabilitation processes and the importance of a holistic approach to patient care. It also covers the basics of functional assessment, principles of kinesiotherapy, and fundamental physiotherapy techniques, as well as the development of initial clinical skills. Students are trained to understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and its role in movement, and to apply basic approaches in planning rehabilitation care in accordance with ethical and professional standards of physiotherapy practice.

    The course “Anatomy II” deepens knowledge of the structure of the human body, with a focus on internal organ systems and their functional organization. Students study in detail the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and endocrine systems, as well as their role in maintaining homeostasis and normal body function. In addition, the course covers the functional and clinical anatomy of organs and systems, providing an essential foundation for understanding physiological and pathological processes. Students develop skills in identifying and interpreting anatomical structures in a clinical context, linking anatomical knowledge to its application in physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

    The course “Health Promotion and Wellness” focuses on developing knowledge and skills to promote health, prevent disease, and improve quality of life at both individual and community levels. Students are introduced to factors influencing health, including lifestyle, nutrition, physical activity, stress, and social and environmental determinants. In addition, the course covers health promotion strategies and programs, health education, and the role of healthcare professionals in encouraging healthy behaviors. Students are trained to plan and implement preventive and educational activities that contribute to wellness and sustainable health.

    The course aims to develop basic competence in understanding and communicating in English in both everyday and academic contexts, as well as to acquire fundamental knowledge of common medical terminology in the student’s native language. It includes orientation to relevant studies in Health Sciences, preparation for participation in role plays, dialogues, and doctor–patient communication simulations, and the use of digital learning tools (e.g., Google Classroom, PowerPoint, online dictionaries). Students are expected to attend classes regularly and actively participate in discussions and group activities. To pass the course, students must attend at least 70% of lectures, complete all written and oral assignments, achieve a minimum grade of 6 (sufficient) or 51% in the combined final exam, and demonstrate continuous progress in English communication within medical contexts.

In addition, the course focuses on learning different types of therapeutic exercises and their application in various clinical conditions. Students develop skills to understand and implement basic exercise-based rehabilitation programs while respecting principles of safety, load progression, and individualized treatment.

    The course “Biomechanics and Kinesiology with Pathokinesiology” provides advanced knowledge of biomechanical and kinesiological principles of human movement, as well as pathological changes that affect movement patterns. Students study body mechanics under normal conditions and in the presence of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, understanding their impact on function and performance. In addition, the course focuses on pathokinesiology analysis, identifying movement deviations and functional compensations that occur in disease and injury. Students are trained to evaluate human movement from a clinical perspective, using biomechanical knowledge to plan rehabilitation and improve motor function.

    “Clinical Practice II in Physiotherapy” represents a more advanced phase of students’ practical training in real healthcare settings, where they further deepen and expand the knowledge and skills acquired during the previous practice. During this practice, students take a more active role in patient assessment, care planning, and the implementation of physiotherapeutic interventions under professional supervision. The practice aims to further develop clinical skills, professional communication, and teamwork within a multidisciplinary team, as well as to strengthen clinical documentation skills and basic decision-making abilities. Students gradually increase their level of autonomy in professional activities, integrating theoretical knowledge more deeply with clinical practice and preparing for greater responsibilities in the later stages of their studies.

    The course “Physiology and Neurophysiology II” deepens students’ knowledge of the functioning of the human body’s organ systems and the complex neurophysiological mechanisms that regulate the coordination of vital functions. Students study in greater detail the functioning of the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and renal systems, as well as their interaction with the nervous system in maintaining homeostasis. In addition, the course focuses on neurophysiological processes involved in motor control, sensory integration, and higher nervous functions, providing a strong foundation for understanding functional and pathological disorders. This course directly supports clinical application in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, helping students connect physiological knowledge with therapeutic practice.
  • [C2730] [5 ECTS] Fundamentals of Massage
    Theoretical teaching: During theoretical instruction, students are introduced to medical massage as part of physical medicine, as well as its effects and physiological impact on different organs and body systems. They study the basic principles, techniques, rules, indications, and contraindications of massage. Gradually, students master massage methods and techniques for different body regions, as well as various types of massage widely used in physiotherapy. Practical teaching: During practical training, students apply and reinforce theoretical knowledge through exercises in the physiotherapy and rehabilitation laboratory. They work in pairs in order to practically master massage techniques and methods.

Semester 3

  • [C2743] [3 ECTS] Internal Medicine with Rheumatology
    The course “Internal Medicine with Rheumatology” provides fundamental knowledge of internal organ diseases and rheumatologic disorders, focusing on etiology, symptomatology, diagnosis, and principles of treatment. Students are introduced to the most common diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and gastrointestinal systems, as well as rheumatologic conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. In addition, the course emphasizes the importance of clinical assessment and the impact of these diseases on patient functionality and rehabilitation needs. Students develop skills to connect internal medicine and rheumatology knowledge with the physiotherapy process, contributing to rehabilitation care planning.

    The course “Pediatrics” provides fundamental knowledge of child health and diseases from birth to adolescence, with a focus on normal growth and development as well as common pediatric disorders. Students are introduced to the principles of pediatric care, clinical assessment of children, and the specific aspects of treatment in this age group. In addition, the course covers the importance of prevention, vaccination, and health education for children and their families. Students develop skills to understand the physical, emotional, and social needs of children, forming a foundation for the application of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in pediatrics.

    The course “Neurology” provides fundamental knowledge of the structure and function of the nervous system, as well as the most common neurological disorders affecting motor, sensory, and cognitive functions. Students are introduced to the basic principles of clinical neurology, including neurological assessment and understanding the mechanisms of central and peripheral nervous system diseases. In addition, the course focuses on recognizing neurological symptoms and syndromes and understanding their impact on patient functionality. Students develop skills to link neurological knowledge with the rehabilitation process, forming a basis for the application of physiotherapy in patients with neurological disorders.

    The course “Massage – Special Part” focuses on the application of advanced therapeutic massage techniques in specific conditions and pathologies. Students are introduced to methods of adapting massage according to individual patient needs, considering indications and contraindications in various musculoskeletal, neurological, and systemic disorders. In addition, the course develops practical skills in the use of specialized massage techniques as part of the rehabilitation process. Students are trained to integrate therapeutic massage into physiotherapy treatment plans while respecting the principles of safety, effectiveness, and individualized care.
  • [C2739] [7 ECTS] Clinical Practice III
    “Clinical Practice III in Physiotherapy” represents an advanced stage of practical training, where students take greater responsibility in the assessment and treatment of patients in real clinical settings. During this practice, they apply their acquired knowledge and skills more independently, actively participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of physiotherapeutic interventions with minimal professional supervision.The practice aims to strengthen clinical competencies, decision-making skills, and independent work, as well as to fully integrate theoretical knowledge with clinical practice. Students develop advanced communication skills, clinical documentation abilities, and multidisciplinary collaboration, preparing for a more autonomous practice of the physiotherapy profession.

    The course “Kinesiotherapy – Special Part” focuses on the application of therapeutic exercises in specific pathological and clinical conditions, with the aim of restoring and improving motor function and the patient’s functional capacity. Students are introduced to the principles of kinesiotherapeutic treatment for various musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary conditions, learning how to adapt exercise programs according to individual patient needs. In addition, the course develops skills in functional assessment, treatment planning, and rehabilitation progress monitoring. Students are trained to select and apply specialized kinesiotherapy techniques while respecting the principles of safety, individualization, and therapeutic progression

    “Clinical Practice in Kinesiotherapy” represents the practical application of theoretical knowledge in kinesiotherapy in real clinical settings. Students engage in functional assessment of patients, identification of movement limitations, and planning of therapeutic exercise programs tailored to the clinical condition and individual needs of the patient. In addition, during this practice students apply various kinesiotherapy techniques under professional supervision, monitoring treatment progress and outcomes. The practice aims to develop clinical skills, professional communication, and decision-making in rehabilitation, as well as the full integration of theoretical knowledge with practice.

  • [C2745] [6 ECTS] Manual Therapy and Fitness
    The course “Manual Therapy and Fitness” focuses on the application of manual techniques and physical exercise programs to improve motor function, reduce pain, and enhance physical performance. Students are introduced to the principles of manual therapy, including joint mobilization, manipulations, soft tissue techniques, and muscle relaxation methods. In addition, the course highlights the importance of physical activity and fitness in maintaining health and supporting the rehabilitation process. Students develop skills to design and implement exercise programs tailored for therapeutic and preventive purposes, integrating manual therapy with fitness concepts for a comprehensive and functional approach to patient care.

    “Clinical Practice IV in Physiotherapy” represents the final and most advanced stage of practical training, where students demonstrate their professional competencies in real clinical settings. During this practice, they take a high level of responsibility in patient assessment, treatment planning, and the implementation of physiotherapeutic interventions, operating with a high degree of autonomy under professional supervision. The practice aims to consolidate theoretical knowledge and practical skills, develop clinical decision-making and professional responsibility, and prepare students for entry into the labor market. Students develop advanced skills in communication, clinical documentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration, demonstrating readiness for independent physiotherapy practice.

    The course “Gerontology with Geriatrics” provides knowledge about the aging process and healthcare for older adults, including the biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging. Students are introduced to age-related physiological changes, as well as common geriatric diseases and their impact on functionality and quality of life. In addition, the course focuses on comprehensive assessment of the elderly patient and planning individualized care and rehabilitation. Students develop skills to provide appropriate, ethical, and patient-centered care, promoting healthy aging and functional independence.
  • [C2748] [7 ECTS] Clinical Practice (Balneotherapy Centers)
    “Clinical Practice in Balneotherapy Centers” involves practical training of students in specialized institutions where natural therapeutic factors such as mineral water, mud, and climate are used for treatment and rehabilitation purposes. During this practice, students are introduced to the indications and contraindications of balneotherapy, as well as the various therapeutic procedures applied in these centers. The practice aims to develop skills in applying balneotherapeutic methods in combination with physiotherapy, through the assessment of patients’ functional status and participation in planning and implementing rehabilitation treatments. Students also develop professional communication, teamwork, and adherence to ethical standards in specialized healthcare environments.

    The course “Balneotherapy and Climatotherapy” provides knowledge on the use of natural therapeutic factors such as mineral water, therapeutic mud, and climatic conditions in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of various diseases. Students are introduced to the mechanisms of action of these factors on the human body, as well as the indications and contraindications for their application in clinical practice. In addition, the course focuses on integrating balneotherapy and climatotherapy into physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs. Students develop skills to plan and implement treatments tailored to patient needs, while respecting principles of safety, effectiveness, and individualized healthcare approaches.

    The course “Surgery, Traumatology, and Orthopedics” provides fundamental knowledge of surgical treatment principles, traumatic injuries, and musculoskeletal system disorders. Students are introduced to common surgical procedures, fractures, soft tissue injuries, and orthopedic conditions, as well as the processes of healing and recovery. In addition, the course emphasizes the importance of clinical assessment and the role of physiotherapy in preoperative and postoperative phases, as well as in the rehabilitation of patients with traumatic and orthopedic conditions. Students develop skills to understand treatment indications and to contribute to the planning and implementation of rehabilitation care.

    “Clinical Practice: Physiotherapy in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology” represents the practical application of theoretical knowledge in the treatment of patients with internal organ diseases and rheumatologic disorders in real clinical settings. During this practice, students participate in functional assessment of patients, identification of limitations, and planning of physiotherapeutic interventions tailored to the clinical condition. The practice aims to develop skills in applying physiotherapy techniques in conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, and rheumatologic diseases. Students also learn to monitor patient progress, document treatment, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, integrating theoretical knowledge with clinical practice.

Students are involved in functional assessment of patients before and after surgery, identification of movement limitations, and planning physiotherapeutic interventions tailored to the clinical condition. During this practice, students apply physiotherapy techniques to restore mobility, strength, and function, as well as contribute to the prevention of postoperative complications. The practice aims to develop clinical skills, professional decision-making, and multidisciplinary collaboration with surgical and trauma care teams.

Students are introduced to the principles of postoperative rehabilitation, fracture healing, soft tissue injuries, and complications that may affect patient functionality.     The course “Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Neurology” focuses on the application of physiotherapeutic methods in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with central and peripheral nervous system disorders. Students are introduced to common neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathies, as well as their impact on motor, sensory, and cognitive function. In addition, the course covers principles of functional neurological assessment and planning of individualized rehabilitation programs. Students develop skills in applying specialized neurological physiotherapy techniques to improve mobility, functional independence, and patients’ quality of life.
  • [C2751] [3 ECTS] Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology
    The course “Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology” focuses on the application of physiotherapeutic and rehabilitation methods in the treatment of patients with internal organ diseases and rheumatologic disorders. Students are introduced to the impact of these conditions on patient functionality, as well as the role of physiotherapy in improving functional capacity, reducing symptoms, and enhancing quality of life. In addition, the course covers the planning and implementation of individualized rehabilitation programs for patients with cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, and rheumatologic diseases. Students develop skills in functional assessment, selection of appropriate therapeutic techniques, and monitoring of treatment progress in accordance with patients’ clinical needs.

  • [C2757] [3 ECTS] Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Orthopedics
    The course “Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Orthopedics” focuses on the role of physiotherapy in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. Students are introduced to common orthopedic conditions, including fractures, joint injuries, deformities, and degenerative disorders, as well as their impact on motor function and mobility. In addition, the course covers principles of functional assessment and planning of orthopedic rehabilitation programs. Students develop skills in applying physiotherapy techniques aimed at restoring mobility, strength, stability, and daily function, in collaboration with the orthopedic team.
  • [C2758] [7 ECTS] Clinical Practice: Physical Therapy in Orthopedics
    “Clinical Practice: Physical Therapy in Orthopedics” represents the practical application of theoretical knowledge in the assessment and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal disorders and injuries in real clinical settings. Students are involved in functional assessment of orthopedic patients, identification of movement limitations, and planning physiotherapeutic interventions tailored to the clinical condition. During this practice, students apply physiotherapy techniques to restore mobility, strength, stability, and daily function, as well as contribute to the rehabilitation process after injuries and orthopedic procedures. The practice aims to develop clinical skills, professional decision-making, and multidisciplinary collaboration in orthopedic care.
  • [C2759] [4 ECTS] Prosthetics and Orthotics
    The course “Prosthetics and Orthotics” focuses on the principles, design, and application of prosthetic and orthotic devices in the rehabilitation of patients with limb loss or functional impairments of the musculoskeletal system. Students are introduced to types of prostheses and orthoses, materials used, and their role in improving mobility, stability, and functional independence. In addition, the course covers patient assessment, device fitting, and monitoring of rehabilitation progress. Students develop skills to understand the integration of prosthetics and orthotics with physiotherapy, contributing to optimal restoration of function and patients’ quality of life.
  • [E3023] [7 ECTS] Clinical Practice (Elective)
    The practical component of teaching is carried out with active and appropriate student participation in all practical activities, in modern classrooms equipped with advanced visual teaching tools, in relevant university laboratories, as well as in healthcare institutions/clinics with which SEEU has signed cooperation agreements. - Clinical practice in physiotherapy starts from the first semester, as students first acquire basic theoretical and practical knowledge and skills (in the skills lab/cabinet), based on the fundamental physiotherapy and rehabilitation courses. - Clinical practice is conducted during the summer period in public or private healthcare institutions with which the South East European University has established cooperation agreements. - The selection of departments/clinics/health services for clinical practice is made in accordance with the course content and the level of the academic year within the physiotherapy study program. - For completed clinical practice, the student is required to keep a CLINICAL PRACTICE LOGBOOK in accordance with the guidelines for field practice in the Republic of North Macedonia (E4E@mk). - Upon completion of clinical practice, the student must submit a relevant CERTIFICATE issued by the institution where the practice was carried out. - Clinical practice in each academic year is conducted in designated healthcare institutions with which SEEU has cooperation agreements, in line with the theoretical and practical areas from which students acquire knowledge according to the structure of the physiotherapy study program.
