Study Cycle: First Cycle (Undergraduate)
Faculty: Health Sciences
Programme Code: NS-EN
Academic year: 2023 / 2024
Title: Bachelor of Nursing (General)
ECTS: 180 (3 years)
Decision:

The purpose of nursing education is to address the health needs of individuals, groups, and the wider community through:

  • Studying the impact of environmental risk factors on health;
  • Providing healthcare services to specific population groups, including infants, young children, school-age children, women, the elderly, workers, athletes, and individuals with physical or developmental disabilities;
  • Preventing, treating, and rehabilitating patients with chronic non-communicable diseases;
  • Ensuring early detection, prevention, and control of infectious diseases;
  • Conducting screening examinations for early disease detection and prevention of sports-related injuries;
  • Delivering emergency medical care and home-based treatment;
  • Performing polyvalent patronage and community-based healthcare activities.

Recognizing that vocational education often places greater emphasis on theoretical knowledge than on practical skills, and that employer involvement in the educational process is frequently limited, the professional study program “General Nursing” is designed to address these challenges by strengthening the focus on practical and clinical training.Nurses represent the largest segment of the healthcare workforce and perform a wide range of roles and responsibilities. They work in close collaboration with physicians as integral members of the healthcare team. While physicians are primarily responsible for diagnosis, treatment decisions, and prescribing medications, nurses ensure the continuous implementation and management of patient care, contributing directly to successful treatment outcomes.Nurses are present in all healthcare settings where physicians operate-including hospitals, clinics, medical practices, emergency departments, intensive care units, schools, and patients’ homes-providing direct patient care and supporting recovery, health, and overall well-being.

Graduates of the professional study program “Nursing Studies (General)” are qualified to work in a wide range of healthcare settings at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of care, in both the public and private sectors.

They may be employed in:

  • Healthcare institutions, including hospitals, clinics, polyclinics, primary healthcare centers, and specialized departments such as emergency care, intensive care units, surgery, pediatrics, and internal medicine;
  • Community and home-based care services, including patronage services, public health centers, schools, and social care institutions;
  • Specialized healthcare and rehabilitation centers, such as institutions for chronic disease management, oncology, dialysis, mental health, and physical rehabilitation;
  • Non-governmental and international organizations, engaged in public health programs, humanitarian missions, health promotion, and disease prevention;
  • Educational and training institutions, as clinical instructors or assistants, following further academic and professional development;
  • Administrative and managerial positions, including head nurse, unit coordinator, or healthcare service manager, depending on experience and additional qualifications.

Graduates are equipped to perform professional duties in accordance with ethical, legal, and professional standards, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered care. They are also prepared for lifelong learning, continuous professional development, and further specialization in various fields of nursing.

Semester 1

  • [C2687] [3 ECTS] Nursing care process and documentation
    The purpose of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge in key areas of fundamental nursing care, as well as an understanding of both analytical and practical approaches in this field. Students are expected to acquire foundational theoretical and practical knowledge of the basic principles of nursing, becoming familiar with the characteristics of nursing care and the role of the nurse in both healthcare settings and the community. They should also be able to perform practical work in accordance with the education and skills they have acquired during their studies.
  • [C2688] [4 ECTS] Anatomy and physiology
    This course provides a comprehensive and clinically oriented understanding of human anatomy and physiology, with a strong emphasis on its application in nursing practice. The focus is placed on the body systems most relevant to patient assessment, clinical decision-making, and the understanding of disease mechanisms (pathophysiology). The course integrates foundational scientific knowledge with practical clinical relevance, enabling students to connect normal body structure and function with alterations seen in disease states. Key areas include: • Pathophysiology Integration: Introduction to how normal anatomical and physiological processes are altered in common diseases (e.g., the relationship between vascular changes and hypertension in the cardiovascular system). • Clinical Assessment Skills: Linking anatomical landmarks and physiological principles to nursing assessment techniques, such as accurate placement of a stethoscope for cardiac and respiratory evaluation. • Pharmacological Relevance: Understanding how medications interact with specific organs, tissues, and receptor systems (e.g., the action of beta-blockers on cardiac β₁ receptors). By the end of the course, students will be able to apply anatomical and physiological knowledge in clinical contexts, supporting safe, evidence-based nursing care and improved patient outcomes.
  • [C2689] [3 ECTS] Patologjia
    The core aim of Pathology is the study of disease, serving as the bridge between normal Anatomy and Physiology and the clinical manifestations of illness. The Pathology course (often referred to as Pathophysiology) is one of the most essential subjects, as it focuses on the mechanisms of disease: how normal physiological functions are altered and how these changes lead to signs, symptoms, and the need for nursing intervention. Clinical integration is fundamental, as the success of the course lies in linking the “why” (the mechanism) to the “what” (the nursing action); therefore, students are expected to relate signs and symptoms (e.g., fatigue, pallor) to their underlying mechanisms (e.g., reduced oxygen-carrying capacity due to anemia), and to determine appropriate nursing interventions based on the pathological process (e.g., elevating the head of the bed in patients with congestive heart failure to ease breathing, understanding that cardiac failure leads to fluid accumulation in the lungs).
  • [C2690] [3 ECTS] Biochemistry and biophysics
    This course aims to familiarize students with the structure and functions of vital biomolecules (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids), to analyze the fundamental processes of metabolism and regulatory mechanisms, and to explain the physical principles of biological processes such as osmosis, diffusion, biological electricity, and bioenergetics. It also develops essential laboratory skills required for nursing practice and prepares students for understanding advanced clinical disciplines such as physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to explain the chemical structure and physiological role of biological molecules, understand metabolic processes and biochemical balance, describe the basic physical laws affecting the human body, apply the concepts of osmosis, oncotic pressure, diffusion, and electric potential, evaluate the impact of biochemical parameters on nursing diagnosis, apply basic laboratory techniques in biochemistry and biophysics, and relate biochemical and biophysical knowledge to pathology and clinical nursing practice.

  • [C2686] [4 ECTS] Nursing theories, concepts, person-centred care theories in nursing and health care
    The student will acquire knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundations of the development of nursing as a discipline, including key theoretical models and the four fundamental concepts of nursing. The student will be able to differentiate between the terms metaparadigm, concept, model, theory, and empirical indicators, as well as outline the classification of nursing models (needs, interaction, outcomes, caring/becoming), identifying and critically analyzing at least one model from each category. In addition, the student will critically evaluate the contribution of formal nursing models to clinical practice and discuss evidence-based practice and reflective practice as alternative theoretical approaches in modern nursing. The student will gain knowledge of the specific characteristics of professional nursing practice and the role of the nurse within healthcare teams, research, education, and policy, developing professional, responsible, confident, and humane working approaches in relation to patients, colleagues, and society. Finally, the student will be able to apply theoretical knowledge in the delivery of nursing care, taking into account individual patient needs and the specific characteristics of the clinical setting, and to provide comprehensive, problem-centered care.
