The OSCE High Commissioner Knut Vollebaek delivers a lecture on integration of diverse societies

On Thursday (23rd May 2013), the OSCE High Commissioner, Knut Vollebaek delivered a lecture for SEEU students and staff on the topic: “Integrating Diverse Societies: A State Responsibility” at the South East European University-Tetovo.

SEEU’s Provost Andrew Goodspeed, made a short introduction of Commissioner Vollebaek. He said that the job that Commissioner Vollebaek is carrying out a difficult job, and one of enormous responsibility. Yet, he has carried forth this work with strength and commitment. We are pleased that today the Commissioner is a lecturer at out University.

While speaking on the topic the Commissioner Knut Vollebaek, among others said: “Your country, like other countries in the OSCE and beyond, is ethnically diverse. Ethnic diversity is a matter of fact, not a definition.” He also said: “the integration of diverse societies is a challenge facing all governments, including yours. I see integration as a process not an outcome. As circumstances change, policies will have to be adopted. Educational institutions are of particular importance in establishing future society.”

After the lecture there was time for discussions, where participants asked questions about important issues, mainly about ethnic relations.
