The debate was held prior to the election activities for the Student Parliament and Association at SEEU.
The Youth Education Forum of Macedonia delivered a presentation on the topic of student organizing and the need for student association representatives, while the SEEU Secretary-General, Mr. Xhevair Memedi, MBA, spoke about the new Rule on Student Parliament and Association at SEEU.
“The Rule is drafted in line with the actual laws in Macedonia and University rules and normative acts. During the drafting process of the rule, all aspects for the student association to be the real voice of the University for students were taken into consideration. Your involvement in this organization will make the work of the Student Parliament and Association more successful,” said Mr. Memedi. He spoke to students about the goals and objectives of the new Student Parliament, which related to the overall mission of the University and student representation at all levels.
The SEEU Executive Advisor for Performance and Quality and chairwoman of the Central Election Commission, Ms. Heather Henshaw, informed students about how to apply for participation in the elections, conditions and activities that would be organized in this regard. “I want to assure each student that you will have the opportunity to use your right to vote. We will guarantee fair elections and will not allow any violation of the voting process. Success depends on you”, said Ms. Henshaw.
Marija Milçevska, representative of the Youth Education Forum of Macedonia, spoke about issues related to student organization and experience that this forum had with the last elections, which were held at the University of Skopje.“The Student Parliament represents students’ interests internally and externally. Only your greater commitment and involvement enables you to have success and more activities of this association,” said Ms. Miliçevska.
Students were actively involved in the debate by giving comments and asking questions, mostly related to the previous organizational activities of students at the university, the status of the new Student ombudsman/woman, Student Parliament Budget, the manner of voting, and other issues.
According to the Rule, the Student Parliament will have 30 members with a two year mandate (third year students for one year unless not graduated) and will be represented by all University Faculties, Tetovo and Skopje Campus and with equal opportunities representation. Students are encouraged to apply and vote.
