Roundtable on the representation of women in science - SEEU: Model of Gender Equality in Academia and Management

Empowering women, the challenges they face and providing solutions for a more equal future were the main issues discussed at the roundtable, held today (February 11, 2025), at South East European University, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) and organized by the Faculty of Contemporary Social Sciences and the Women in Science Network.

The event was attended by prominent academics and professionals, who shared their experiences and perspectives on the challenges faced by women and girls in science and education.

The event was opened by the Rector of SEEU, Academician Prof. Dr. Abdylmenaf Bexheti, who emphasized the importance of supporting and empowering women in academia.

"Our university is an excellent model not only in the country, but also in the region in terms of equal gender representation, both in managerial and academic structures, always based on meritocracy and not on reserved quotas," emphasized Rector Bexheti.

He highlighted that gender equality is also reflected in the number of advanced academic degrees. Over 23 years, out of a total of 2,915 graduates at the master's level, 1,717 are women and 1,198 are men. This balance is even more evident in doctoral studies, where 157 are women and 165 are men.

"The equal representation of women at SEEU is also evident in leadership positions. Out of six members of the Rector's Executive Team, three are women. Likewise, in the Rector’s Directorate, out of 15 members, seven are women, while in the Senate, out of 31 members, 12 are women, and in the University Board, out of 7 members, 2 are women" noted Rector Bexheti.

Asst. Prof. Dr Elisabeta Bajrami Ollogu, Chair of the Women in Science Network and Prof. Dr. Besa Arifi, Pro-rector for Research and International Relations, underlined the role of institutional cooperation and support for women in science. Pro-rector Arifi presented detailed data on the representation of women in research and academic aspects at SEEU, where equality is also evident.

In the first session, experts Asst. Prof. Dr. Zebide Ibraimi and Arta Xhelili discussed the "Burnout" and its impact on women engaged in education and science.

The second session brought to attention strategies for managing stress and increasing work performance, where Prof. Dr. Urime Demiri Shaipi shared valuable advice on this topic.

The event ended with an open discussion, where participants shared their experiences and challenges, followed by a closing speech by Prof. Dr. Merita Zulfiu-Alili, Dean of the Faculty of Contemporary Social Sciences.

After the roundtable, attendees had the opportunity to continue discussions at informal refreshment break, for further deepening networking and professional collaboration.
