Academician Alajdin Abazi, Rector of SEE University:2009 – A Successful Year

In the year that we are leaving behind, the University will be closing with approximately 7000 students attending lectures in the first cycle of studies and nearly 4000 graduates, and over 1200 students who are actively following second cycle studies (47 of which have already earned the scientific rank—Master). Currently, the University offers 16 first cycle academic study programmes and 33 second cycle academic study programmes in five faculties: Law, Business Administration, Public Administration and Political Sciences, Contemporary Sciences and Technologies, and Languages, Cultures and Communication.

Also, there are 39 candidates in doctoral studies in the mentorship system, 13 of which have earned a doctoral degree. All of these things were successfully achieved within the 30,000 square meter University Campus, which is pursuant to the highest international standards. Supported by a modern and efficient infrastructure, the information above presents the mosaic of the success of a unique institution of higher education in the country, region and beyond.

Today, the South East European University’s legal status presents a positive mixture as a private-public, not-for-profit University. Above all, this is a result of the University becoming a powerful promoter of transmitting the spirit of tolerance, in respecting multilingualism and cultural diversity in teaching and scientific research, always developing its study programs toward a broad international and European perspective.

Taking into consideration today's circumstances in the higher education area in the Republic of Macedonia and the region, in terms of various offers of study programs, the University Board through the Development Strategy has decided that the University's mission remains unchanged—continuing to contribute to higher education in the Albanian language, based on the flexible use of languages policy, while maintaining its multicultural character, with study programs pursuant to contemporary international standards. Two main priorities are defined in this strategy which guarantees the successful accomplishment of our mission: quality assurance and long-term financial sustainability. Concerning the academic aspect, one of the advantages that distinguishes SEE University from traditional universities in the country and the region is the possibility for continuous development of study programs according to a well implemented process by all parties involved. The process of developing study programs follows the recommendations of international standards described in the documents based on the Bologna Declaration as well as best practices of successful international universities.

Therefore, we have successfully entered the second year of operation of certain dispersed academic programs in Skopje, including the offer of study programs in English. Under a framework for partnerships with higher education institutions from Europe and the U.S., we are implementing new study programs, such as the dual degree program with the prestigious University of London - London School of Economics, as well as various scientific projects.

Since the establishment of the University, the support of the international community has always been present and has encouraged us to provide a continuity of our activities and achievement of the University's aims. Equally important is the fact that, from 2001 onwards, our University has gradually shown to meet its foreseen mission. It is evident that the basic aim of the University mission is to contribute to higher education in the Albanian language; however we have also realised other aspects that make our University a new model in Macedonia and the broader region with quality as our priority.

In the coming year, we will continue further with new developments in our institution, not only in the existing University campus environment where we expect to have an Eco-campus, initiate doctoral studies, distance learning studies, and build a sports hall, but moreover, we will expand our capacity building infrastructure in our University campus in Skopje.

In the end, I would highlight the fact that harmonizing standards and validating European knowledge with our needs and requirements is a successful test for SEEU; therefore, that which we consider a great obligation for us now is to continue to be a leader of educational standards and academic values in the region.

      Happy New Year – 2010!
