World Bioethics Day Marked at SEEU

On Wednesday (19th October 2106) South East European University in Skopje observed World Bioethics Day. According to the Rector of SEEU, Prof. Dr. Zamir Dika, bioethics on a global scale is becoming part of the global activities aimed at creating interactive policies that reflect humanist values.

This trend has contributed towards activities that will coordinate collective actions on a global scale, by giving the rightful place to bioethics in education and research. “For this purpose, the International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics was established, based in Haifa University in Israel; Macedonia has also been a member of this network since 2007, becoming the 12th member state. A crucial role in this membership was played by SEEU by promoting the Bioethics Unit, which is led successfully by our University. As time passed, this network got larger and so it now has over 100 member countries," said the Rector. He added that this year, for the first time, UNESCO has declared 19th October as World Bioethics Day. This day is celebrated in all member states on the same date, at the same time and with the same theme: Human Dignity and Human Rights.

Others addressing the celebration were the Rector of Mother Teresa University in Skopje, Prof. Dr. Azis Pollozhani, who spoke about Cultural Competencies in Narrative Medicine; and Prof. Dr. Mentor Hamiti, the head of the Bioethics Unit of Macedonia at SEEU, also addressed recent and current activities of the Unit.
