The EU included the SEE University at the launching event of Horizon 2020 for the Western Balkans

The newest scientific program of the European Commission “Horizon 2020” was officially launched for the Western Balkans countries during the high-level regional launch conference "Preparing together for EU Accession through Cooperation on Research and Innovation" which took place in Budva, Montenegro on March 3rd and 4th, 2014.

Organized by the European Commission’s Directorate General of Research and Innovation and hosted by the Ministry of Science of Montenegro, the event brought together ministers of the education and sciences of the countries of the Western Balkans, as well as several representatives from the European Commission, representatives of some of the universities in the region and experts of the field of research and European projects to speak about Horizon 2020 both on political and scientific level.

The DG for Research and Innovation of the European Commission included as well as the South East European University at the opening ceremony of its latest program. The Director of the SEEU’s Scientific Institute “Max van der Stoel” Prof. Dr. Veton Latifi was invited to take part the at the launching conference of the EU’s new scientific program Horizon 2020.

The main destination of the “Horizon 2020” is through the research projects to address the challenges for the life, security and environment and as well help to answer to the economic crisis via investing on scientific projects and as well strengthen the global role of the EU in research, innovation and technology. The new EU’s scientific program Horizon 2020 will be based on three pillars: excellent science, industrial leadership and societal challenges.

Among others, Minister of Science of Montenegro (Sanja Vlahovic), Minister of Education and Sports of Albania (Lindita Nikolla), Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sredoje Novic), Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to Montenegro (Aleksandar Vasilevski), Minister of Education, Science and Technology of Kosovo (Rame Buja) and the Deputy Director General of DG Research and Innovation of European Commission (Wolfgang Burtscher) addressed the launching event and they welcomed the active participation of the region in Horizon 2020. The participants realized that compare to the previous EU scientific programs, Horizon 2020 is supposed to have more simple rules and access for universities and other institutions in terms of the application processes.
