SEEU Organizes a Conference on the Refugee Crisis

'The refugee crisis and its humanitarian and political implications in the Balkans' was the topic of the third annual conference organized in cooperation between the SEEU Institute “Max van der Stoel” and the Polish Embassy in Skopje. It was held on Tuesday (17 May 2016) at South East European University (SEEU).

“Even though the refugee crisis came as a result of internal conflicts in the Middle East region, it activated the European consciousness and soon this crisis forced various countries to follow the German policy of 'Open Doors’. Although this policy was not always understood by certain governments, it nevertheless encouraged and accelerated diplomatic actions for a more efficient management of this crisis”, said SEEU Rector, Prof. Dr. Zamir Dika. He added that there exists motivation and a feeling of solidarity here deriving from our tradition of hospitality, when we as nation were obliged to accept refugees from other parts of the region.
The Polish Ambassador to Macedonia, HE Jacek Multanowski, said that he was pleased with the cooperation that this Embassy has with the University, where this cooperation was evidenced by this conference and by other activities expected to be organized in the future.

The Director of the Institute "Max van der Stoel", Prof. Dr. Veton Latifi, said that they did not choose this topic by chance, but they have taken into consideration the relevance and scope by which this crisis affects the overall development of the region and beyond.
The conference was attended by researchers and experts on this issue, notably Adam Balcer from Poland, Suzana Saliu (Crisis Management Centre), Grida Duma (University of Tirana), Bernd Burwitz (GIZ) and professors from SEEU, the University of Tirana and "St. Cyril and Methodius" University.
