The project of the Ministry, entitled "Achieving Biodiversity Conservation through the Creation and Effective Management of Protected Areas and Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Land Use Planning," was presented at this event. It is being implemented with the support of UNEP Vienna with financial support from the Global Environmental Fund (GEF).
The Rector of South East European University, Prof. Dr. Zamir Dika, gave a speech of welcome. In this, he stressed the importance of involving experts from universities in every initiative that deals with projects and activities that are dedicated to a wider community of citizens.
“The declaration of Sharr Mountain as a National Park should be understood as an objective to ensure the development and advancement of the entire area and its natural value, but also to assist correct management and sustainable use," said Minister of the Environment, Nurhan Izairi.
Attending the event also were the Mayor of the Municipality of Tetovo, Teuta Arifi; H.E. Thomas Michael Baier, Ambassador of Austria; the representative of the UNEP Office in Vienna, Carlo Pierre Sandei; and other experts in the field, representatives of municipalities who specialize in this area and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
The event was organized so that all parties involved in the earliest stages would be included in activities that are undertaken by the Ministry and the Government of Macedonia concerning the protection of Sharr Mountain.
The official ceremony was preceded by a working meeting between Rector Dika and Minister Izairi.
