Howard Dean lectured at SEEU on democracy and human rights

On Tuesday (24 june 2014), at South East European University, the former governor of Vermont (USA) and candidate for the 2004 presidential nomination of the Democratic Party, Dr. Howard Dean gave a lecture in front of representatives of non-governmental organizations and students from different universities in Macedonia and other stakeholders. Previously, he met with the Rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Zamir Dika, who informed him about the work, study conditions and opportunities offered by the University.

Dr. Dean was accompanied by NDI regional director Robert Benjamin and director of NDI Macedonia, Chris Henshaw.

In the formal session with students, Rector Dika praised the contribution of the NDI for the democratization of institutions and political parties in Macedonia, and stressed the fact that for the University it is honour to host Dr. Dean.

During his lecture, Dr. Dean spoke about democracy, freedom and human rights, as well as about the current political developments in the world, highlighting his experience as a politician and activist. He noted particularly the power that youth has today to change things through the Internet and information technology. In this context, he mentioned some best practices for young people who, according to him, "have brought changes in his country or in the world”.

Currently, Dr. Dean is chairman of the NDI Board and an independent consultant, focusing on various issues, such as early childhood development, alternative energy resources, health care, and other similar social concerns.
