The Representative of Ombudsman Office held a lecture for students of the Faculty of Law

The lecture was delivered on 16 November at the SEEU campus by Ms. Merita Alili representative of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), which functions under the Ombudsman Office of the Republic of Macedonia

Students were informed about the purpose of the NPM, when it was established and how it functions.

“The National Preventive Mechanism started to function from April this year and conducts its activities by observing corrective – penal facilities in the entire territory of Macedonia," said Ms. Merita Alili.

Observations are carried out in two ways: announced and unannounced visits to penitentiary institutions in the Republic of Macedonia. The interest of students was raised especially about the results from unannounced visits to corrective – penal facilities.

Also, many students asked questions about the authority of the NPM in relation to concrete cases, in terms of conversations with persons deprived of freedom, without supervision, without witnesses, personal communication or through an interpreter.

The aforementioned Sector collaborates with experts of different fields, depending on the specific case needs in order to prevent violence and implementation of the minimal UN Standard Rules in the penitentiary institutions in the Republic of Macedonia.

SEEU’s Faculty of Law students showed that they had prior knowledge about this topic, such as, the notion of torture and principles that prohibit these actions, based on the national legislation.
