This Round-Table was organized on the occasion of the International Day of Human Rights and the 66th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In his welcoming speech Rector Prof. Dr. Zamir Dika stressed the importance of marking this day by saying that it makes us reflect on human rights, respect them, and obliges us to think about the role of academic institutions and their contribution in this regard.
Dr. sc. Mark Lasser, Senior Justice Advisor, INL Justice Section, US Embassy Skopje spoke about the USA system of civil rights and liberties.
The state Ombudsperson, Mr. Ixhet Memeti, spoke about human rights issues from the point of view of the Ombudsperson.
“Approximately, during one year we process about eight thousand cases of violations of human rights. This figure is very high in comparison with countries in the region”, said Memeti.
The Director of the Scientific Institute “Max Van der Stoel” Prof. Veton Latifi, said the main goal of the research group with whom we organized this workshop is scientifically to give opinions regarding the situation of human rights.
“We should defend freedom, because this is the core of human rights”, said Latifi.
The Head of the Helsinki Committee of RM, Gordan Kalajdjiev, spoke about human rights in the context of judicial reforms.
The Dean of the Faculty of Public Administration and Political Sciences, Prof. Dr. Elena Andreevska, spoke about Vienna +20: the future of human rights.
Prof. Dr. Bekim Kadriu, from the Faculty of Law of SUT, spoke about the right not to be discriminated against.
Also participating in this round table were Doc. Dr. Emine Zendeli and M-r sc. Sami Mehmeti, both from the SEEU Faculty of Law.
