Stoel Day - in Honour of the Founder of SEEU, Max van der Stoel

Stoel Day brought together professors, students, university management and foreign diplomats accredited to Macedonia, among them the Ambassador of the Netherlands in Macedonia, H.E. Marriet Schuurman and the OSCE Ambassador to Macedonia, H. E. Ralf Breth.

"Knowing an idealist and a believer of the most sublime human values--this would describe my experience with the wonderful man and distinguished diplomat, my friend and our friend, Max van der Stoel. Therefore, our graduates and people who are associated with the University are different from others and, in fact, they are our missionaries of change and of progress. We should continue to promote and maintain this mission for generations to come," observed the Rector of SEEU, Prof. Dr. Zamir Dika.

“This University would not exist without Max’s determination. It is entirely fitting that we honour him with this day. I will always remember Max with affection. To the outsider he may have appeared austere, commanding and sometimes withdrawn", said the President of the SEEU Board, Prof. Dr. Dennis Farrington.

“There is no better way to commemorate Max van der Stoel than to reflect and act on his lessons. These are lessons of freedom, human dignity and rights, democracy and international solidarity; they have not lost their relevance for the world we live in today”, said the Ambassador of the Netherlands in Macedonia, H.E. Marriet Schuurman.

“Being the first in this newly created post, I will not be able to profit from the experience of my predecessors. If you continue in this University’s founding father’s footsteps, if you promote tolerance and fight against prejudice and stereotypes, I am sure your efforts will be fruitful”, said the OSCE Ambassador, H.E. Ralf Breth.

“Max van der Stoel had the ability to resolve obstacles by dialogue and to negotiate. In the University, for example, he talked with the professors alone and then he created the opinion for something. He also mentioned, in front of the International Foundation Board, that the University will be dedicated to the Albanian language. He had the ability to stop conflicts. ”, said the Rector Emeritus, Academician Alajdin Abazi.

“[The Rector Emeritus] met Max van der Stoel in 2001 and he was unsure if some diplomat of high level would take our case into consideration. But you will find that Max van der Stoel always sought to create solutions. He helped the University to negotiate in the European Commission and, after that, we built the Rectorate building of SEEU”, said the Secretary-General of SEEU, Xhevair Memedi.

"We are gathered here today to remember the personality and work of the former OSCE High Commissioner. We are gathered here today to recall the quiet diplomacy of the silent preventive diplomat, who demonstrated significant persuasion abilities during his specific conflict resolution efforts all around", said the Director of Institute for Scientific Research Prof.Dr. Veton Latifi.
