From the university’s establishment, language policy at SEEU has been an important issue, closely connected with its operations. The strategic plan of SEEU states: “During the process of establishing SEEU, after thorough and deep analysis of higher education in the Republic of Macedonia with an emphasis on the access of Albanians to higher education and the right of use of the Albanian language, the mission statement gave priority to that objective.”
Today, SEEU implements a policy of “flexible use of languages,” requiring the usage of Albanian language, as well as Macedonian and English. Therefore, SEEU requires students to have a solid knowledge of Albanian, Macedonian, and English, but also offers the opportunity to take classes in German, French, or Italian.
The following table illustrates
the use of language within each study cycle.

SEEU features a modern Language Centre to help students with their language studies and achieve the “flexible use of languages.”
According to the European University
Association (EUA) evaluation of SEEU: “the University has
an impressive policy of languages. Students have the right to
learn in their native language but they also have to learn the
language of the other ethnic community. In addition, students
are also asked to learn the English language (or German, French,
Italian languages).”
