The Computer Centre at SEEU plays a central role in every SEEU student’s academic career. The primary functions of the Centre are to provide IT Skills courses and electives specified in the curricula of the five SEEU Faculties. All students are, during their first year of study, obligated to follow an Advanced IT Skills course with the intention to further their knowledge and use of IT applications. Organizing and providing this course is currently the main activity of the IT Department at the Computer Centre and most of the work is carried out electronically. Course material is usually provided to students through the SEEU Intranet and students apply the same procedure when receiving and handing in their home assignments. Another main activity of the Centre has until recently been also the running of the Higher School, which due to recent reforms will cease to exist at the end of the academic year 2005/06. The main objective of the Higher School has been to provide students with a sound knowledge of computer science principles and help them develop practical skills in marketdriven software applications. As a new development, the Computer Centre has also begun to provide services to the wider community, offering a one year training programme in applied computers. At the end of this programme, participants are expected to gain a Certificate in Applied Computer Science. This programme is realized based on an equivalent programme at IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) and it is the first of its kind in the region. All of the above mentioned activities of the Computer Centre are managed and executed by several part-time instructors and full-time teachers, who in addition to teaching the IT-Skills courses also handle the ‘Help Desk’ services provided to students and staff members, who have problems or technical questions related to the computer applications.
